The main aim of the Ibn Battuta Centre for exploration and field activities is to support the exploration of Mars and others planets, and to provide opportunities for scientists and the public for experiencing the exploration on Earth and in the Solar System.
The Ibn Battuta Centre for exploration and field activities was established in 2006 by the International Research School of Planetary Sciences (Pescara, Italy) and by the Faculté de Sciences of the Université Cadi Ayyad (Marrakech Morocco), to prepare and execute tests of rovers, landing systems, instruments and operations related to the exploration of Mars and Moon. The Centre is located in the Universite’ Cadi Ayyad of Marrakech (Morocco).
The Centre has established a field facility in Erfoud (Ibn Battuta Centre Field Facility) within the compound of the Kasbah Xaluca. The facility consists of a large and two smaller workshops, two offices and a meeting room. Internet is provided by satellite connection.
Large external areas allow storage and upload/download operations and the mobilisation of large containers and large trucks. A helipad completes the infrastructure. The services of the hotel Kasbah Xaluca are available for the working personnel.
In an advanced position at the border of the desert a smaller infrastructure (Desert Outpost) has been prepared for operations directly in the field. The Auberge Merzane hosts this outpost that may provide support to surface and aerial operations.
The Ibn Battuta Centre has the capability to deploy in the field infrastructures such has large hangars, offices, satellite communications, workshops and support operations with efficient logistics such as air support, transportation of large containers or any other materials. Field operations are also made simple by effective logistics.
Field operations have been performed in Morocco and Sahara, as well as in other parts of the world have been accessed or can be accessed such as the Arctic, Patagonia, Gobi desert, Amazon rain forest and the Danakil depression.
